Monday evenings that became a community

Magyar Krónika's March 23, 2026 report explores the world of Szentendre's Monday-night QuizNight, one of whose regular homes is Dorothea Bistro & Café. The Szentendre quiz story began at Kedves Kávézó, and when Anita and Joe moved to Dorothea, both the game and its community moved with them.

The report also shows that Dorothea is much more than a place to eat: regular guests, quiz teams, literary evenings, exhibitions, and recurring gatherings make it a genuine community space. Monday's QuizNight is one of the best examples – an evening where games, dinner, and thinking together come together naturally.

Literature · Szentendre Writers' Club

Writers, poets, and sold-out evenings

As a regular venue for the Szentendre Writers' Club, Dorothea has hosted many memorable gatherings. Alongside poet and literary translator Nádasdy Ádám, guests have included Péterfy Gergely, Dragomán György, Szécsi Noémi, and Tasnádi István.

At the closing evening of the 2026 Festive Book Week, Fenyő D. György and Forgách Róbert held a conversation titled “Travel Guide and Travel Fragments”. On occasions like these, literature reaches the audience through direct, personal conversation.

Local values · Market week

When the Szentendre market shaped the menu

Dorothea's kitchen has often drawn directly from the local market. A beautiful batch of asparagus, local cheese, or artisan sausage was not simply an ingredient, but the starting point for an entire week's specials.

The idea of a “market week” reflects Dorothea's approach: use what is fresh and nearby, and create a genuine connection between the town's producers, hospitality businesses, and guests.

Kitchen · Weekly special

The season is not decoration – it is part of the menu

When the first asparagus arrives, the soups become lighter, more fresh vegetables appear on the plate, and new side dishes make their way onto the menu. Dorothea's weekly menu is not a rigid template, but a reflection of the kitchen's current thinking.

Alongside meat and fish dishes, vegetarian options are prepared regularly, so the changing selection offers several choices every week.

Community · Szentendre

They come back for more than just the food

A personal touch has always been important in Dorothea's story. For Joe and Anita, hospitality does not end when an order is taken: they know the familiar faces, care about local connections, and welcome arriving guests with natural warmth.

That is why many lunches turn into longer conversations, and many first visits become regular returns. The atmosphere is shaped just as much by the guests as by the dishes coming from the kitchen.

Everyday life · Cat-friendly Dorothea

A cappuccino, a cat, and the feeling of home

Dorothea is a cat-friendly place, and the bistro's cat has become part of everyday life. The cat-patterned cappuccino and the four-legged host who appears unexpectedly fit perfectly with the light-hearted, playful atmosphere of the place.

These small details may not appear on the menu, but they add a great deal to the experience. They are what can turn a simple coffee into a personal memory.

Terrace · Summer evenings

The quiet of a side street, just steps from the Main Square

Dorothea's terrace is close to the buzz of Szentendre while still feeling removed from its noise. Its tucked-away courtyard atmosphere can easily turn a quick coffee into a long lunch, or an afternoon meeting into a relaxed evening conversation.

In the warmer months, this space becomes one of the bistro's most important areas: a place where a walk through town, fresh food, and the feeling that there is no need to hurry for a while all come together.
